Do poodles shed?
Poodles don't shed seasonally or in the same quantity as most dogs. Because their coat is technically hair and not fur, the cycle of each hair follicle is much longer, very similar to humans. This quality along with their curly texture means any shedding is virtually unnoticeable outside of brushing.
Are poodles hypoallergenic?
While no dog is truly allergen free, poodles are among the few breeds that don' t bother people who have extreme reactions to dander. This is because poodles have less dander compared to most other breeds and that in combination with their non shedding coats reduces the allergens spread around the home.
How often do poodles need groomed?
Frequency of grooming does somewhat depend on the length and style of the clip as well as the amount of at home grooming done by the owner. The typical schedule is every 4 to 6 weeks.
How often should I bathe my poodle?
As long as you are using a quality shampoo and conditioner that is specifically for dogs then every 1 to 2 weeks and definitely blow dry them.
How often should I brush my poodle?
Poodles with a coat length under 2 in. are very unlikely to develop matting so simply brushing once a week focusing on high friction areas will do a lot to prevent matting. Talking with your groomer to determine what is best for you unique situation can also be helpful.
When should my puppy go to the groomer?
I recommend going as soon as possible even if it is just for a bath, sanitary trim and face, and blow dry. Your puppy has been acclimated to grooming as early as 3 days old so you want to keep your puppy in that routine to lessen fear and anxiety in the future.
When should I shave/trim my older puppy's coat?
From 6 months to a year old puppies will begin to get their adult coats and "blow" their puppy coats. Many people decide that this is the time to go with a shorter coat as during this time the puppy coat tends to mat with the adult hair that is coming in.
Are poodles good for families with kids?
Poodles make wonderful family pets because of their loving, loyal, and gentle nature. They tend to bond very closely with their families and are good with young children.
Is crate training necessary?
While technically not necessary it is a very important skill for every dog to learn. It can help reduce potty accidents, separation anxiety, curb destructive behavior. It also acts as a "den, " giving dogs a personal space to feel secure in and to sleep in.
Do pee pads help with potty training?
Pee pads can actually do more harm than good. You never want to encourage a puppy to go potty inside the house. They should be trained immediately that potty is outside and they need their "call word" like "let's go potty" and take them out often since they have small bladders when they are young. And never raise your voice or hand when they have an accident. Remember, they are still a baby.
